GoPro will release a quadcopter in the first half of next year

Well, it's happening — GoPro is officially getting into the drone game. Following rumors last year, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman announced at the Code Conference that the company was going to build its very own quadcopter, with plans to launch in the first half of 2016. "The quad is in some ways the ultimate GoPro accessory," Woodman said. He then went on to note that the devices are core enough to their business for it to make sense to go out and build their own.

Woodman wouldn't give an official price yet, but he did note that GoPro was a "consumer focused company" — so it seems logical the GoPro quadcopter will be in the same price range as drones from DJI, Parrot, and 3D Robotics. He also said that letting people fly their cameras "sparks the imagination" of users — it's not hard to imagine that once those users have their imaginations sparked, they'll want to buy more accessories for their quadcopter. It's a product that fits right into GoPro's strategy, and GoPro will be right there with products to offer new users. Woodman said that there will be a number of related products available when GoPro's quadcopter launches.
