Let her eat... Chanel! The hilarious moment NYC Subway passengers see model devouring her 'designer handbag'

Bizarre sights are common on the New York Subway but yesterday commuters got quite a shock as a woman started devouring what appeared to be a Chanel handbag.

A YouTube video shows a blonde lady proudly strolling along with her designer purse before sitting in a train carriage and placing the leather-look design on her lap.

Much to the bemusement of fellow passengers, she then takes a big bite from the top corner. Gradually, as she munches away, it becomes clear the fashion accessory is actually crafted out of chocolate cake.

After finishing a mouthful of sponge, the woman then peels off the black, quilted-effect icing and pops it into her mouth.

At the end of the one-minute-23-second long film, she invites the man sitting to her left to take a quick sample.

He swiftly removes his glove so he can grab the cunningly disguised dessert - opting for a nibble from the bottom corner.

One female passenger said after witnessing the stunt: 'I didn't see her take a bite from the cake, [so] I was like, "who does this lady think she is, with her Chanel bag taking up all this space on the train?"'

But when she realized the bag was in fact a piece of confectionery, she couldn't help but giggle.

The Chanel handbag cake was made by a pastry chef instructors Michelle Olson and Claudia Silva from the Soho-based International Culinary Center.

It took them eight hours to mold white cake, chocolate ganache and fondant into the desired shape.

It was created to coincide with New York Fashion Week, which kicks off on February 6.

For those wanting to make their own unusual-shaped cake, the International Culinary Center runs a Professional Pastry Arts program at its New York and Los Angeles branches.

The institute also sells similar designs on a made to order basis, priced at around $650.
