Minister of Korean Ministry of Gender Equality & Family, Kim Hee-jung
On the 4th of August 2015, Korean Ministry of Gender Equality & Family defined their position that the Basic Law on Gender Equality does not include contents for LGBTI.

And the ministry requested Deajeon Metropolitan City to amend the Gender Equality Ordinance which includes articles about ‘protection and support for sexual minorities’.

The ministry totally accepted demand of conservative christian groups who have been hate acting, then they said that the Basic Law on Gender Equality just specifies rights and responsibilities of women and men, but it does not include LGBTI.

This measure is absolutely discriminative and violate equal rights.

The measure of ministry gives the way to allow discrimination and violence against sexual minorities by dismissing the meaning of 'gender equality' that should be considered on the intersectional points of sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, racial, economic status, body differences, ages and so on.

In the society that has severe discrimination and oppressions against LGBTI, everyone can not avoid influences from dichotomous distinction between sexes and its social norm. And its discriminative influences and oppressions must be back to everyone.

Thus, Korean Ministry of Gender Equality & Family should research discriminations against LGBTI and should consider how to apply their experiences to women policy. And they should encourage and support LGBTI people to involve them in the way to achieve gender equality.

We urge Korean Ministry of Gender Equality & Family to withdraw their request to let local governments delete the articles for LGBTI rights from the Gender Equality Ordinance.

And we also urge Daejeon Metropolitan City, Gwacheon-si and other local governments to keep their policy to achieve gender equality for everyone.
