Participle constructions are some of the expressions used quite often in daily English. They are meaningful since they make complicated sentences simple and provide diversity in language. However, the students learning them often feel confused about using participle constructions. So, the purpose of the thesis is to inspect their functions and features especially about the option of deleting the conjunctions in the embedded clause so called complementizer.
Participle construction is an adverbial equivalent of the elleptic form coming form two clauses, and one is a main clause and the other is called an embedded clause within a complex or a compound-complex sentence. When the embedded one is transformed into a participle construction, its connection with the main one is like temporal, casual, conditional, concessive, and continual one and the like.
In changing the form into a participle in an embedded clause, the same subject as the one in the main clause should be deleted and the main verb should transform itself from a finite verb into a non-finite verb like a participle. Therefore, participle construction is an adverbial phrase structure of a reduction form where one or more constituents are deleted, but the deleted constituents are recoverable.
This thesis focuses on two different situations. Firstly, primary aim is to identify the possibility of deleting the subordinate conjunction in an embedded clause when the clause gets changed into participle form based on the fact that the subjects of the embedded clause and the main clause are the same. Secondly, secondary aim is to identify the reason why the subordinate conjunction in an embedded clause should be deleted when the subjects of the embedded clause and the main clause are different. The subordinate conjunctions forming an embedded clause are called complementizers because they can make the sentence types, and in the thesis several subordinate conjunctions like when, while, after, though, if, because, since, as are used and inspected as samples. And some survey experiment from English speakers was conducted to identify the authenticity of what the thesis emphasizes.
The first chapter is to research the real situation of teaching participle constructions. And in real class, the reason why some conjunctions should be deleted are not clearly specified. In other words, redundancy and case theory issues are ignored. And some description on case theory was handled, too. There are four cases like nominative case, genitive case, dative case, and accusative case and whether sentence constituents can give case to another constituent is the main factor of deleting the conjunctions.
The second chapter is to check out the current situation of Predicate Grammar which is the theoretical background of the thesis. And its definition and kinds are dealt with.
From the third chapter, 10 textbooks used in high schools are used to check the reality of the participle construction education. What is noticed is that instead of teaching the real principle, most schools concentrate on making the students remember the method of making the participle constructions by teaching verbally or using multimedia source.
From the fourth chapter, samples of predicate grammar and case theory ideas are utilized to identify the reason of deleting conjunction in an embedded clause. When the subjects of two clauses are the same, the embedded clause can delete its conjunction in changing its form into participle construction based on the fact that the connection between the main clause and embedded clause is cause and effect. The deletion occurs so as to avoid redundancy and the research survey by 33 English speakers from various countries proved it. However, when the subjects of two clauses are different, the embedded clause must delete its conjunction in transforming its form into participle construction based on the fact that the connection between the main clause and embedded clause is in any case. The reason for this fact is that when participle form takes place from an embedded clause, the form can not have any conjunction because the embedded clause subject becomes not the nominative case but the accusative case, which means any complementizer must not be on the left side of the subject In other words, participle construction with two subjects is not available for securing conjunctions.
The purpose of this thesis is to be a tool for teaching students with a better and more effective method about participle constructions, but some terminologies and ideologies are not simple enough to make students feel at ease while learning. So further studies on how to apply this result and explanation should be conducted in the foreseeable future.
